  Wholesale murder, intimidation and burnings by the TNI-sponsored Militias after the pro-independence vote in 1998 lead to the deployment of the largely-Australian INTERFET in 1999.        

               As the Armys then Ready Reaction Force, First Battalion was held back because of regional uncertainties but was finally deployed in October 2000 as part of the newly-formed UN Force.
