SOMALIA
Two years of civil war had destroyed the infrastructure and the economy of Somalia. Control of southern Somalia was being contested by four warlords who commanded militia armies. Urban criminals and nomadic bandits abounded. Over 4 million Somalis were starving and dying of disease because food and medicines were being withheld and stolen by the warlords and bandits. A lightly armed Pakistani battalion and later a force of US marines were at hand, but unable to provide the necessary assistance. This then set the scene for the deployment of the 1 RAR Group for 4 months in January 1993
